Last night, Stephen Hammond MP, the Member of Parliament for Wimbledon hosted a crime summit with the local police superintendent and other senior officers for local residents to share their concerns and ask questions.
Over one hundred local residents attended the meeting, and questions were asked on a wide range of subjects, including car theft, e-scooters, graffiti, and road safety.
At the start of the meeting Stephen shared the results of his recent crime survey, which received over one thousand responses. Local people were asked about their experience of crime and how safe they felt in Wimbledon. The results showed residents overwhelmingly wanted the police to focus on burglary, violent crime, and anti-social behaviour.
Whilst a large majority of respondents said they felt safe in Wimbledon, more visible police on patrol was a key ask from local people. Recently the Metropolitan Police have recruited an additional 3,666 officers in London – and Stephen is committed to seeing Wimbledon receive our fair share.
Commenting, Stephen Hammond MP said:
“I am grateful to the Police Officers and local residents for attending my crime meeting. It was a fascinating discussion and I look forward to working with the police to address the concerns which were raised at the meeting.
“Wimbledon is a special place to live and one of the safest areas in London and I was really encouraged by the Officers’ response to residents’ concerns. If Wimbledon is to remain one of the best places to live we must be proactive in our approach . At the end of the meeting I encouraged everyone to help the police by reporting crime and getting involved with local ward police panels.
“Should any residents have any specific concerns following the meeting please do not hesitate to raise these with me.”
