Donald Trump’s Executive Order banning refugees and visitors from seven Muslim-majority countries is wrong, divisive and counter-productive. Discrimination based on nationality and faith is unacceptable. I am pleased that our Government has stood up for the rights of UK citizens travelling to the USA, to confirm that British dual nationals will be unaffected. You can find out more about this on the Foreign Office’s website here: https://www.gov.uk/government/news/presidential-executive-order-on-inbo…
In regard to Donald Trump’s state visit, the reality is he is the President of the United States whether we like it or not. Therefore we are going to have to engage with him and his administration; we will gain nothing by isolating him.
A number of world leaders, whose policies we condemn, have had state visits in the past, in the hope that our Government can apply pressure on these countries to change course. I hope this is what we can do with President Trump, and seems to be the case following his re-commitment to NATO having met the Prime Minister.
