Since news broke about the temporary closure of the Wimbledon Village Farmers’ Market, the market operators, Stephen Hammond MP and Councillor Thomas Barlow have been inundated with messages of sadness and offers of support.
It’s clear that the market is supported by the vast majority of residents, as well as local businesses and the Wimbledon Village Business Association.
Many of the comments received mention how the market has increased the vibrancy of the village, getting more people shopping local and becoming a great source of enjoyment to people through the difficult times we find ourselves.
We have also been taken aback by what we have heard from stall holders in the past few days. Some are local and only operate at the village market, with markets being the only source of income for many.
Whilst the threat of legal injunction from a private individual against Merton Council issuing a trading license for the market will take time to resolve, we know that people will want to show their support for the market and this petition provides that opportunity.
